2010-06-12 Charlottesville gig canceled

Hari Om everyone,

First, the good news:

Our first tour of the north east was a success! We met a number of incredible new people, and were able to sing with new crowds every night. There was more love and enthusiasm than I even could have dreamed of. All over the north east people opened their studios, their homes, and their hearts to us, and my gratitude is immeasurable.

In less good news:

At some point on the road I picked up a virus. It started to make it self known before we left Ithaca. Luckily I was able to finish the whole gig in Buffalo. Our trip to Harrisonburg was spent drinking ginger tea, with me communicating with my travel companions by passing notes and sending text messages to save myself from having to speak. It was fun, in a sort of kitchy way, and with the help of the other Basement Bhaktis we were able to get through most of the gig in Harrisonburg last night.

We decided to come home, sleep on it, and see how I felt today. Unfortunately, there has been no improvement. In fact, I’m hardly able to talk. I have never had to cancel a show in my life, and as much as I don’t want to do this, there is just no way I’ll be able to sing tonight.

A hundred apologies to everyone who planned to come, and especially to the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar. Again, I have never had to do this before, and I hope that I never have to do this again.

For now, I’m going to get rest, and focus on healing, so that you can still plan to see us at Yogaville next Saturday, June the 19th, and at Shanthi Om Yoga in Staunton VA on the 31st of July.

Om shanthi,
J

This Thursday, Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar

I’m really, really excited about this show.

First of all, the lineup for this show, which tends to be different every time we play the bazaar, is going to feature both Marshall Camden on keyboards and Mike Johnson on percussion. Some of you may recognize those names; the three of us used to play together in the band In Tenebris.

This is going to be the most members of In Tenebris on stage at the same time since the band split up, so it’s really special for us. We have some great stuff cooked up to commemorate the occasion, and a few additional fun surprises as well.

Hope to see you all there!

Whirlwind

It’s been a roller coaster couple of weeks leading up towards the holidays. I spent last weekend at a Sufi retreat in DC, and the Baraka Center ended up hosting me for a last minute Kirtan on Saturday night.

This Saturday you will find me in Yogaville at 7:30pm to sing kirtan for 30 minutes before their weekly satsang. I’m also prepping for the Kirtan at Fish Tree Yoga on the 18th in Pensacola, Florida.

Here’s a flier for the upcoming Tea Bazaar gig on Monday December 28th. I’m really stoked about this gig because one of my oldest musical friends has agreed to open up the show with his blues band. It should be a really fun night, and we’ll definitely make coming out on a Monday worth it for you!

This Friday at Twisted Branch!

My monthly kirtan at the Twisted Branch is coming up this Friday. I am really quite excited about this for a number of reasons. First of all, we’re going to be sharing the bill with Ali Youssefi, who is one of my favorite local singers. He performs deeply spiritual music steeped in the teachings of the baha’i faith, but also carries the interfaith torch as we do.

Secondly, I’m going to be playing with a different lineup of Basement Bhaktis. Arcadia and Patrick will be there on Shruti box and Keyboards, respectively, but I’m also going to be joined by Kevin Ardrey on drums and Chris Rhees on Djembe. Leia Manuel will be on hand to sing responses, and old school Basement Bhakti Courtney Miller will be joining her. You may even see accordian player Tom Lynch in the house… anything’s possible! There’s a lot of new and different energy in this lineup and I’m quite excited to share it with you all.

Doors are at 9pm, and the cost is $5. Here’s that flyer again, in case you missed it!

Om Shanthi Shanthi Shanthi,

In just 2 weeks

In just two weeks we’re going to be at the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar, this time with a special guest, Ali Youssefi. Ali plays some wonderful music steeped in the spiritual teachings of the Baha’i faith. He’s one of my favorite local artists, and I know that he’ll become one of yours as well.
